Butterfly Habitat

When creating a butterfly habitat just remember to have fun and relax.

No matter what your available space, butterflies are attracted to gardens, butterfly boxes, container flowers, raised garden beds, small backyard areas and balconies.

A beginner gardening tip for any butterfly garden is to not limit yourself to having just flowers that attract butterflies, which is most obvious.

Having a butterfly host plant encourages mating where the female can then lay her eggs. With just having a nectar source only, butterflies may come and go.

Butterflies prefer sunny, open areas.

Butterflies prefer the sun for many reasons. The most important is because they are cold-blooded and rely on the sun to warm them. They also need the sun for navigation.

Butterflies are attracted to bright colors. Colors also appear differently to butterflies with their compound eyes. With the ability to see ultraviolet light, some butterfly species may be attracted to one specific color. Other species are able to identify a few more colors.

If your space is limited, avoid taller plants or objects. Shadows can cast over blooming flowers. With more colors of flowers the more likely to attract butterflies.
